Let me first state the obvious by saying that this Sunday’s game between the Jets and the Patriots will probably be the biggest grudge match in Jet history for sure, and maybe even in recent NFL history. The animosity that exists between these two franchises, or at least the perceived animosity, is as poisonous as I’ve ever witnessed in any sporting platform.
Most observers believe that the Pats will look to punish the Jets. The Boston Globe’s Dan Shaughnessy thinks the Pats may look to humiliate the Jets in the same fashion that Muhammad Ali did to Erne Terrell back in 1967, when Terrell kept referring to Ali as “Cassius Clay” in the build-up to the fight. During the entire 15 rounds, Ali beat up Terrell from pillar to post–literally carrying him and refusing to finish him off–while taunting Terrell by saying “What’s my name?” with every punch.
This game has the potential to turn out the same way. You could have the Pats, already with a big lead, blitzing on every defensive set. Or, we could see Belichick keeping his starters in the game and throwing deep with the game already in hand.
In any event, this game could get very ugly and very nasty, and someone could get seriously hurt. Obviously, the way to prevent things from escalating is for the Jets to be competitive and give the Pats all they can handle. However, all signs point to this being a blowout (the spread is now 27 and could climb even higher), so it is imperative for the Jets to remain professional and let the Patriots, especially Coach Belichick, act like the spoiled children they are.

Wow, wonder what the record for highest spread is?
