Monday morning musings

Kellen Clemens on the hot seat already?Well, the Eagles came close, but those dastardly Patriots won again! The only game that I can see them even remotely losing is against the Steelers in two weeks, but that possibility is not a solid one.

Anyway, there already is some talk about the Jets drafting a quarterback in the next NFL Draft. Kellen Clemens has not been spectacular since taking over for Chad Pennington, but then again the entire team has not been spectacular the entire season, so what did anyone expect?

Clemens is a work in progress, but he already has some qualities that could make him successful. He has a strong arm (obviously), he can take a big hit, and he can run when necessary. I’ve already likened him to Ben Roethlisberger, and I think the comparison fits. He just has to develop more poise and has to get better with his decision-making on the field, but there is an upside to his game, so we need to give him the rest of this year AND next season to see where it all goes.

In addition, the crop of quarterbacks coming out next year is nothing special, so why should the Jets waste a high pick for someone who would not be considered a “franchise” player? It would be a better strategy to either draft a game-breaking receiver for Clemens to throw to, or a lineman who can rush the quarterback. There simply is no need to make Kellen Clemens walk the plank at this time or in the near future. This team has many more holes to fill first.
