The Kellen Clemens Era now begins

clemens.jpgOK, we’ve gotten our wish for Kellen Clemens to be named the starting quarterback for our 1-7 team. What next?

Obviously, Clemens will bring a much stronger throwing arm to the table, which means that we will most likely see more slant routes, deep out patterns, and long passes. The receiving corps needs to be ready and adjust to Clemens’ fastball instead of Chad Pennington’s more softer (yet extremely accurate) throws.

It’ll be interesting to see just how much of the playbook Coach Mangini will allow offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to work into the game plan for Clemens, but hopefully the days of dink and dunk passes will be a thing of the past. Plus, an offense that has the ability to stretch the defense will naturally have a better chance to establish a running attack, so hopefully Thomas Jones will be able to get the ball and make plays on a more consistent basis.

It’s reasonable to expect Clemens to have his struggles going forward, but he did look pretty good against the Ravens earlier this year, so he should be able to build on that and set himself up for success. One can only hope–this team is down in the depths and needs something to look forward to in an otherwise dismal season.
