Bullet Points, Vol. 4

  • Fireman EdIt seems that after a kickoff return for a touchdown that immediately you’re the next Gale Sayers. Leon Washington has had his moments as a Jet (who can forget his run after catching that screen pass from Chad Pennington last Christmas against the Dolphins?). However, calling for him to “get the damn ball” is a little too much hyperbole, if you ask me. As I’ve said here before, he should be used like Bruce Harper was–a change-of-pace back who can get some good yardage on sweeps and stretch plays, and can catch the ball out of the backfield. I wouldn’t look to make him a co-feature back with Thomas Jones. Washington can be very effective if his talents are used correctly.
  • The lack of a pass rush is leading for calls for the 3-4 defensive scheme to be scrapped. It may be premature to do that and switch to a new scheme after working on it all through training camp and the first three games of the regular season, but some adjustments need to be made quickly. No one is getting close to the quarterback, and the Jets can’t fathom to dream about a wild card spot unless they start doing that. Maybe throwing in a few more blitzes from the likes of Bryan Thomas or Victor Hobson may help.
  • I was wondering why I haven’t seen “Fireman Ed” leading the J-E-T-S chant on TV during the two home games this season. It seems that he had knee surgery recently after getting hurt fighting a fire. It’s easy to forget that “Fireman Ed” is a real firefighter, and if I’m not mistaken, he was there on 9/11 doing what he could to save lives. Hope you get better soon, Ed!
