Jets 13, Eagles 11

Well, the preseason finally and mercifully ended last night for the Jets with their win against the Eagles down at Lincoln Financial Field. Honestly, I watched maybe about 5 minutes of the game–I don’t have much interest in preseason games to begin with, and we all know that the final game is pretty much a waste of time since most of the starters either play the first series of the game only or not at all.

For example, Chad Pennington didn’t play, and neither did Thomas Jones, among a slew of others. Even Kellen Clemens, the now-firmly entrenched backup QB, only played a few minutes. The only thing of note to come out of the game was third-string QB candidate Marques Tuiasosopo (formerly of the Raiders) may have secured his place on the team with his performance last night (9-for-16 for 78 yards, along with a nifty 11-yard touchdown run).

Jack-of-all trades Brad Smith didn’t exactly endear himself to the coaching staff with his performance at QB, so it’ll be interesting to see if the Jets keep Tuiasosopo or decided to go with Smith as the emergency third-string QB. Hopefully you won’t have to be in a position to use your third-string QB, but you’d rather have someone with solid game experience. Smith is better off being a situational wide receiver as well as a punt and kick returner–he has shown better skills at those positions than taking snaps behind center.

The final cuts to get the roster down to 53 will be taking place over the next few days, so we’ll be keeping an eye on who makes the grade and who has to turn in their playbooks. It’ll be quiet for the next few days, but after Labor Day Monday, the build-up toward the first regular season game against the Patriots will be fierce. We’re about to get on the roller-coaster again folks, so get ready to strap in for a wild ride.
