Mangini says Thomas Jones will be in starting lineup for Game 1

Thomas JonesWell, that’s a relief! After suffering a calf strain a few weeks ago, Thomas Jones has pretty much been MIA for the preseason. However, Coach Mangini said yesterday that TJ will be ready for the opener against the Patriots, and that certainly is good news.

It goes without saying that TJ will play a major role in the offense this year. The Jets have not had a true 100% feature running back since Curtis Martin’s last healthy season in 2004. Jones is going to carry the ball anywhere from 20 to 25 times a game, and he needs to be healthy since the offensive line is still developing and he’s sure to take a pounding. Plus, if he can move the ball effectively it’ll take pressure of off Chad Pennington so he won’t be relied upon to win games with his arm.

I’m just hoping that the offensive line will perform adquately so that Jones can do what he is capable of. Yes, Pete Kendall is gone (good riddance!), so the left guard position will be in a state of flux for at least a little while, but overall the running game appears to be in good shape. One can only hope…

I have been pretty impressed with Leon Washington as well, he seems like someone that could play a big role this season.
