I ran across this item the other day and it sort of made me feel sad for my all-time favorite sports hero, and I’m sure for many others as well, Number 12–Joe Willie Namath.
According to the New York Daily News’ Rush & Molloy gossip column, Joe’s 16-year-old daughter Olivia recently gave birth to a baby girl. The father, a 19-year-old out of Jupiter, Florida, has a “questionable” past–he’s been arrested for possession of cystal meth, grand theft, and burglary in the past year. Obviously, he doesn’t come across as much of a role model.
The tidbit goes on to say that the baby will be raised by Joe Willie’s ex-wife, who lives in California, while Olivia will remain in Florida with Joe and her older sister and attend high school.
Apparently, Joe Willie claims to be happy to be a grandfather, but you can’t help but feel sad for him. Sure, just about every man who has a daughter he loves would want the best for her, including the possibility of having grandchildren, but a 16-year-old girl that becomes a mother will certainly have her difficulties. Plus, it is a bit ironic that a guy who was famous for having a “lively” (to put it mildly) social life now sees his teenage daughter having to take on a major responsibility at such a young age.
In any event, I’m sure all of us who grew up rooting for the Jets and idolizing our hero Joe Willie wish him and his family well. No matter what, we still have a big place in our hearts for Number 12.
